Course content

This course, aimed at registered nurses (RNs) holding current AHPRA registration, focuses on the cognitive and technical skills required to accurately perform and interpret advanced nursing assessments on patients and clients. You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills that demonstrate an ability to perform advanced and targeted objective and subjective nursing assessment techniques, and to accurately interpret health assessment findings and related diagnostic procedures.

  • Multidisciplinary assessment of genitourinary function
  • Mechanisms of urinary and faecal incontinence
  • Assessment of genitourinary function
  • Assessment of renal function- Assessment of fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Advanced urinary continence assessment
  • Assessment of gastrointestinal function
  • Advanced assessment of bowel function
  • Assessment of endocrine function
  • Assessment of neurological function
  • Mental health assessment
  • Assessment of cardiovascular function
  • Assessment of respiratory function
  • Assessment of musculoskeletal function
  • Assessment of integumentary function
  • Advanced pain assessment.

 

You’ll learn:

After completing this course, you will be able to

  • Outline and justify the components of body system-based assessments.
  • Perform a focused nursing health assessment.
  • Interpret data from a focused nursing health assessment and develop reasonable and justifiable inferences.
  • Apply knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology to the interpretation of assessment findings.
  • Justify how common investigations used by the multi-disciplinary team contribute to a comprehensive nursing assessment.
  • Critically analyse contemporary knowledge, data and processes in your specialty in order to iform your practice.
  • Determine the communication approach required in a specific situation and tailor your professional communication, using listening, speaking, writing and ICT skills, to achieve effective and positive outcomes.

Your study experience

The course is equivalent to the equivalent of a subject (15 credit points) at postgraduate level (AQF levels 8/9). Completion of the courses in this format will enable you to apply for advanced standing into postgraduate studies in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at La Trobe University.

Delivered online over 12 weeks, the expected time commitment is 4-6 hours, including self-directed study, preparation for online webinars, readings, preparation for assessment and assessment itself.  

The assessment for this course will include a 2500 word written assignment, worth 60% of the total mark, as well as online multiple choice questions throughout the course worth 40%.

Access to courses is generally available two weeks in advance of the scheduled course start date, or as advised in the registration confirmation email.  Course materials are made available via our Learning Management System (LMS) for which you will be provided with your username and initial password.
