The development of this course was funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government as part of the Microcredential Pilot program and in response to nursing care needs in rural health organisations as expressed by Bendigo Health, Echuca Regional Health and the Tasmanian Health Service.

Course content

The development of this course was funded by the Australian Commonwealth Government as part of the Microcredential Pilot program, and in response to technological advancements in the health industry, demand for health care workers with digital literacy skills by rural health organisations including Bendigo Health, Echuca Regional Health and Tasmanian Health Service. 

Topics covered:

  • Understanding Digital Health in the rural context
  • Development of Digital Health skills in rural practice

On successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a digital credential and earn 5 credit points that can be accumulated with its partner course, Introduction to Digital Health for Rural Healthcare Professionals, into 'Digital Health for Rural Nursing Practice' (NRS4005), a core subject in the Graduate Diploma of Rural Nursing Practice. 

 

This course is part of a suite of 5 related short courses offered as the Professional Certificate in Rural Nursing Practice, which is offered at  the special price of $1,485.  

 

 

You’ll learn:

After completing this microcredential, you will have developed competent skills (equivalent to AQF level 8) and be able to :

  • Learn how to use digital health solutions in the planning, implementation and evaluation of care in comparison to traditional care-giving models
  • Know how to successfully consult on, design, implement and evaluate digital health solutions in a variety of contexts
  • Simulate practical applications of digital health tools including electronic health records, clinical decision support (CDS) systems, mobile apps, wearable technologies, telehealth, the internet of medical things (IoMT), artificial intelligence and big data
  • Understand ethical principles of data sharing and your responsibilities in the digitally enabled healthcare system

These skills are in alignment with the Australian Skills Classification ‘Health & Care Skills Cluster’; within the following clusters of specialist skills:   

  • Analyse operational data to evaluate operations, processes or products
  • Plan programs to address community health issues
  • Collect information about community health needs

 

Your study experience

This course is delivered fully online, so it easily fits in with your work and life commitments. Content is self-paced via La Trobe’s Learning Management System (LMS) and you’ll be supported via Zoom drop-in sessions, email correspondence and online forums with your educator.

The total expected time commitment for this course is up to 40 hours, including assessment.  

You must complete the course within 6 months from time of registration.

 

The assessment for this course is a written digital health portfolio of practice (2500 words).

Access to courses is generally available two weeks in advance of the scheduled course start date, or as advised in the registration confirmation email.  Course materials are made available via our Learning Management System (LMS) for which you will be provided with your username and initial password.
