Learning to think - and lead - differently

Alexandra Laurence (Ali), Head of Growth at Ideagen Ops Central, joined La Trobe University’s Design Thinking MBA Micro course through the professional development opportunities offered via the Carlton IN Business network.  The course helped her build on skills she had been using instinctively in her role.

“I realised I had been applying some of the concepts already, but without knowing the frameworks behind them. The course helped me understand the process in a more structured way.”

In a fast-paced tech environment, where decisions are often made on the fly, the opportunity to step back and reflect was a rare and valuable experience.

“The pace of work means you’re always solving problems quickly. The course gave me a chance to slow down and think through challenges differently.”

The course focused on practical tools for understanding customer needs, generating ideas, and testing solutions. For Ali, it provided a clearer method for tackling complex issues and more confidence in guiding her team through uncertainty.  It also made space for experimentation and encouraged her to try things, even if they weren’t fully formed.  That mindset has carried over into how she now works day to day.

“It’s helped me lead more effectively. I’ve come away with new ways to structure problems, involve others in the process, and find solutions that feel more considered.”
