This specialised course also offers eligible health information managers and clinical coders the option of a certificate of competency in internal, or external clinical coding auditing, for which they must demonstrate substantial competence in an ICD-10-AM (10th edition) classification benchmarking test, audit report and final short course examination.

Course content

This course comprises four two-week long modules:

  • Module 1: Principles of case-mix and activity based funding models
  • Module 2: Theory and principles of auditing
  • Module 3: Statistical analysis, methodology and use of contemporary audit tools
  • Module 4: Audit outcomes: reporting and strategic development

 

You'll learn

  • How to apply clinical coding auditing theory and principles to design and undertake a clinical coding audit
  • To demonstrate accuracy in medical record interpretation and clinical abstraction to identify errors in administrative health data
  • To apply knowledge of the classification system and funding model in selecting medical records for audit and analysing coding errors
  • To apply clinical coding auditing processes and to identify and report on factors that impact upon the quality and reliability of coded data.

 

 

 

 

Your study experience

This course contains four two-week long modules, with a time commitment of 6-8 hours per module, including knowledge check and optional drop-in sessions, facilitated by experts in this field. Within the two-week period, you may work at your own pace.  

The overall expected time commitment for this course is 110 hours over period of 15 weeks.

Assessment
 
You will use your newly developed auditing skills in conducting an audit of between 60-100 medical records and writing a management report, as well as take an exam and a health classification benchmarking test.  

Depending on your level of achievement, you will receive one of the following certificates upon successful completion of the assessments, which is recognised by industry, health departments and the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA). 

 

Option 1: Certificate of Clinical Coding Auditing completion (international) ICD-10-AM 10th edition

Audit report minimum score : 50 - 74%

Exam minimum score : 74%

Option 2: Certificate of Clinical Coding Auditing (international) ICD-10-AM 10th edition

Audit report minimum score : 75%

Exam minimum score : 65%

Option 3: Certificate of External and Internal Clinical Coding Auditing (international) ICD-10-AM 10th edition 

Audit report minimum score : 85%

Exam minimum score : 80%

Option 4: Certificate of participation - Clinical Coding Auditing course (international) - ICD-10-AM 10th edition

If the benchmarks for other options are not met.
 

Eligibility

To be eligible to do this course, you will need 

  • a qualification (Bachelor or Master) in Health Information Management from a HIMAA accredited tertiary course

OR

  • Certificate IV or Diploma in Clinical Classification graduates or equivalent who have completed an approved RTO (VET) Clinical Coding course.

OR

  • Nominated applicants from organisations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who have successfully completed 12 months training in clinical knowledge and classification in ICD-10-AM 10th edition.

You will also have:

  • A minimum of of one years’ experience coding in a tertiary hospital, complex case-mix; or
  • Three years’ experience coding at other non-tertiary hospitals, with less complex case-mix;
