Course content

Topics include: 

  • Data normalisation and manipulation using relational algebra
  • Structured Query Language (SQL) - creating database ojects through Data Definition Language (DDL) and how to insert, update, delete and query data using Data Manipulation Language (DML)
  • SQL applied practice and the basic structure of PL/SQL code blocks and persistent objects.
  • Stored procedures, functions and triggers in PS/SQL.

On successful completion of this course, you wil be awarded a digital credential and earn 5 credit points that can be accumulated with its partner course, Database Design and SQL, to stack into 'Database Fundamentals (CSE4DBF)', a subject within the Master of Cybersecurity. 

Credit for study in this course may be available. This recognises prior study or learning that can be credited towards a qualification, thereby reducing the number of subjects required to complete a course. For further information refer to the advanced standing requirements.

You’ll learn:

This microcredential will equip you with basic skills in:

  • Designing a relational database using an Entity Relationship (ER) or Enanced Entitiy Relationship (EER) model
  • Using a transformation process to map the ER or EER diagram to a relational database design
  • Evaluating database design in terms of data anomalies and redundancies and applying the appropriate normalization techniques
  • Evaluating the possible risks and ethical and social considerations relevant to designed systems.

 

Your study experience

This course is delivered online with live sessions, over a 2 week period.  The total time commitment for this course is up to 40 hours, which inlcudes the live sessions, extended reading and assessment.

 

The assessment for this course comprises:

  • A written assignment - database conceptual design (40%)
  • Online exam (60%).

Access to courses is generally available two weeks in advance of the scheduled course start date, or as advised in the registration confirmation email.  Course materials are made available via our Learning Management System (LMS) for which you will be provided with your username and initial password.
