Course content

Strength and power are considered the key physical characteristics in sport, and this course is designed to advance your knowledge and skills in the areas of assessing maximal strength, maximal power and reactive strength. 

 

Topics covered will include:

  • Measurement properties in strength and power assessment
  • Assessing and  monitoring heavy dynamic strength
  • Assessing isometric and explosive strength
  • Assessing and monitoring fast dynamic dtrength
  • Assessing and monitoring reactive strength.

The Course Coordinator is Dr Lachlan James, Senior Lecturer, Sport and Exercise Science, at La Trobe University.  You'll also have access to recorded Q&A sessions with internationally recognised industry and applied research leaders:

You’ll learn:

How to identify and compare methods for assessing and monitoring

    • heavy dynamic strength
    • isometric and explosive strength, and
    • fast dynamic strength and reactive strength.

Your study experience

This course comprises 10 hours self-paced material, some additional reading and an online Q&A webinar that will be scheduled during the course availability period.   The total time commitment is expected to be 15 hours. 

At the conclusion, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance for 10 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). 

Who you'll learn from

Dr Lachlan James

Dr Lachlan James is a Senior Lecturer, Sport Scientist and Course Coordinator of the Master of Strength and Conditioning degree at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. He has published over 60 peer reviewed articles including 35 as first or senior author. Lachlan currently supervises 9 PhD students with research projects in the AFL, NRL, Super Rugby, Queensland Academy of Sport, the Victoria Institute of Sport and with VALD Performance. Prior to entering academia, he spent 10 years in professional practice as a strength and conditioning coach and applied sport scientist.

Vanessa Rohlf 

Vanessa is a Research Officer in the School of Psychology and Public Health, and is a consultant, therapist, and educator specialising in compassion fatigue, stress management, pet loss, and animal bereavement.

Paulieen Bennett 

Pauleen is Head of Department of Psychology and Counselling at La Trobe University. She is Australia’s leading expert in Anthrozoology, past-President and Fellow of the International Society for Anthrozoology, and Associate Editor of the field’s leading journal, Anthrozöos. Since 2011, she has led a multidisciplinary research group focusing on human-companion dog relationships, and particularly on how these impact human health and dog welfare.
