Why lifelong learning matters
The world of work is changing faster than ever. Technology is reshaping industries, automation is altering job roles, and businesses are struggling to find the skilled talent they need. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2025 report, 39% of workers’ core skills will change, and 44% will need to upskill or reskill within the next five years just to stay competitive.
Lifelong learning isn’t just about keeping up, it’s about staying ahead. It’s the difference between feeling overwhelmed by change and having the confidence to navigate it.

Microcredentials – a game-changer
Microcredentials are a game-changer in the world of learning. Whether you're eyeing a promotion, exploring a career shift, or simply staying ahead in your industry, traditional education pathways can feel like a big leap. Microcredentials, however, offer a tailored, flexible approach to upskilling that fits into your busy life.
So, what exactly are microcredentials? They're short, focused courses that prove you’ve mastered a specific skill or area of knowledge. Think of them as a faster way of getting the skills you need, right when you need them.
Real feedback. Real results.

Back to nursing... and loving it!
After more than a decade away from nursing, Lisa Butler returned to the profession with the support of La Trobe’s Re-entry to Practice (Registered Nurse) course. As a recipient of the Victorian Department of Health’s Re-entry Pathway Scholarship for Nurses and Midwives, she was able to access flexible online study and a four-week placement, making it easier to balance learning with life and return to a career she loves.
"I wish I'd done it years ago", she says.

Thought cybersecurity courses weren't for you? So did Mick.
Mick Cliffe, Group Technical Services Manager at Haeusler’s Group in Mildura, was initially unsure about returning to study after being away from formal education for quite a while. But he knew that understanding cybersecurity was essential for his role, and for anyone in business today. With cybersecurity becoming a critical part of every industry, Mick recognised that gaining literacy in this area was not optional.
He completed a couple of microcredentials in cybersecurity, and is now enrolled in a post-graduate course.

Victorian Minister meets Re-entry to Practice alumni
La Trobe University hosted a visit from the Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas MP, who spent time with Lisa Butler and other course participants Sarah Dass, Michelle Unger and Nikki McAlister, that had all undertaken the Re-entry to Practice (RN) course, Australia’s only fully online program of its kind. Supported by scholarships from the Victorian Department of Health, this course enables former nurses to refresh their skills and return to the profession they love.
